Help shape the future of Broxburn Drive

Next phase of consultation on ideas for new homes and neighbourhood improvements

You may know that Thurrock Council has been exploring options to build new homes at Broxburn Drive in South Ockenden to help meet local demand.

In 2020, we identified the area to the rear of Broxburn Drive – including the large parking area and garages running alongside the railway – as a potential location for a small development of new homes. We appointed architects to start looking at options for this development.

Before our architects drew up any plans, we wanted to understand how existing residents felt about the idea of building new homes on this site, as well as any ideas or suggestions they had about wider neighbourhood improvements. We wrote to neighbouring residents in February this year to ask for initial feedback and ideas, and we would like to thank those people who responded to us.

Due to Covid-19, we held an online consultation session back in the spring but couldn’t hold any in-person events, so we said that we would come back to undertake further consultation when restrictions had lifted.

Our plans are still at a very early stage, and we would now like to hear more from neighbouring residents to inform the next steps in the design process.

Our outline proposals

The outline plan within the document library shows our initial thoughts about how a development at Broxburn Drive could deliver between 30 - 40 high-quality new homes alongside improvements to the area for existing residents.

As part of our design process for Broxburn Drive, we have been looking at ways we could reshape some spaces near to existing homes to improve the overall appearance of the neighbourhood. We have been looking at opportunities to remove some of the high walls which currently enclose the courtyards and original drying areas, which could open up these areas to provide more green spaces for residents. These are just ideas at the moment and we would like feedback on these ideas as part of this consultation.

What would we like you to tell us as part of this consultation?

  • What do you think about the potential locations for new homes?
  • What do you think of the proposals to create new areas of green space? How would you like to use this green space?
  • What do you think about the proposed location of parking spaces?
  • What do you think about the idea of opening up the internal courtyards?
  • Are there any security related issues with the existing flats and site layout and how could the new proposals help improve these issues?
  • What things do you like and dislike about the design and style of the

existing buildings in the local area?
