Reverse One-Way Restriction on Chelmer Road - Chadwell St Mary

We call on Thurrock Council to urgently review and reverse the recent one-way restriction on Chelmer Road, which has caused major congestion, safety risks, and inconvenience for local residents in Chadwell St Mary, Essex. We, the residents and regular road users are extremely concerned about the recent change — specifically the one-way restriction placed on Chelmer Road. This road is now blocked from the River View side, meaning that drivers travelling from the west (e.g. from Lakeside) can no longer use this direct route to access the south side of Chadwell. Instead, everyone is forced to go via Thames Drive — a road located 50 yards from the traffic lights, which has now become heavily congested.

This change:

  • Has increased traffic significantly on Thames Drive, causing delays of up to 10 minutes for journeys that used to take less than a minute via Chelmer Road.
  • Creates a serious safety risk, as frustrated drivers are already ignoring the ‘No Entry’ signs and going the wrong way down Chelmer Road. It’s only a matter of time before a serious accident happens.
  • Cuts off access to the entire south side of Chadwell St Mary - if there is ever an incident, blockage, or emergency at the entrance to Thames Drive - there is no alternative route. There appears to have been no proper consultation with local residents, and no clear benefit to the community. Many of us feel this is a poorly thought-out decision that makes life harder and more dangerous for those who live here.

We urge Thurrock Council to:

  1. Reverse the one-way restriction on Chelmer Road.
  2. Engage in proper consultation with local residents before making such disruptive changes.
  3. Review road safety and traffic flow in the whole area to find a smarter, safer solution. Let’s keep Chadwell St Mary moving — safely and sensibly.
