Why are we changing how waste is collected in Thurrock?

We're making these changes to manage our costs better, improve recycling, and ensure we're doing the best for our environment and community.

What can I expect from the new collection schedule?

Your general waste and recycling will be collected on alternate weeks. Week one general waste, week 2 recycling). If you wish, you can opt-in for a chargeable garden waste service collected every two weeks. The service will operate as a chargeable, fortnightly collection of garden waste from kerbside properties normally running annually between 5 February until 15 December.

We'll collect food waste every week. An internal kitchen caddy with lockable lid will be provided for your food waste, as well as an external caddy that you transfer it to for collection. For garden waste like garden clippings, you can choose to join our service for an annual fee of £80, and we'll collect it fortnightly.

How will I know if my collection day changes or if there's a disruption?

We'll ensure you're notified in advance about any changes or updates through our website, newsletter, and social media. Please also keep an eye out for our service information leaflet, which will be delivered ahead of the service changes coming in. This will contain information about changes to your service including what day to place your bins out.

How will these changes affect our recycling efforts?

We're aiming to reduce general waste and boost recycling in our borough. We believe these changes will help us all be more conscious about separating and recycling our waste.

What if I need help with my waste collection?

We will continue to provide an assisted bin collection service for residents whose disability or illness prevents them taking their bins the kerbside, and who have nobody in their household who can do this.

What if I can’t fit everything into my general waste bin?

If you are using the recycling service and placing all your recyclables into your blue bin, you should have plenty of room in your general waste bin for the few items that cannot be collected at the kerbside by the recycling teams. Further information on what can be recycled is available on the council website (Waste and recycling | Thurrock Council).

Does the garden waste subscription include a new bin?

You should already have a brown bin for garden waste, if you don’t already have one, one will be provided as part of your annual subscription.

How do I join the new subscription green waste service?

You will be able to join quickly and conveniently online. We will provide information prior to the service going live.

I am unable to place my bins out for collection. Is there any help available?

Yes. Please contact the council to ask about our assisted collection service.

How will the collection teams know I have an active green waste subscription?

Every year a permit in the format of a sticker will be sent out to you that is applied to your green waste bin. Permits are colour coded so the collections teams can identify that you have a live subscription.

Can I still place recycling that doesn’t fit in my recycling bin at the side of my blue recycling bin?

Yes. The recycling teams will collect your excess recycling.

Can I place waste that doesn’t fit in my general waste at the side of by bin?

No. Only general waste that is in your bin will be collected. If you regularly have excess general waste and need advice on how you can recycle more, please visit our website for more information. Alternatively, please use the Linford Household Recycling Site.

What can I put in my paid for garden waste bin?

Grass cuttings, prunings, leaves, cut flowers, clean straw, or hay & branches under 10cm in diameter. No compostable bags, bio-degradable bags or any kind of bag or sack.

What can I put in my food waste bin?

You can recycle all types of solid food waste if you remove the packaging. This includes eggshells, bones, and teabags. For more information, please visit the council's website (Waste and recycling | Thurrock Council).

Will the council be providing liners for the food waste caddies?

A roll of liners will be provided as a one off when the service starts. These will be delivered at the same time as your internal and external food waste caddies.

Is there likely to be any disruption when the new services start?

Whilst every precaution is taken to ensure minimum disruption, there will always be some level of disruption when making changes. Please bear with us whilst the new services bed in.
