Exploring the potential for new homes at Anton Road

August - September 2023

Thurrock Council is currently exploring the potential to build a small number of high-quality new homes at Anton Road, South Ockendon, to help meet local demand and enhance the area.

We believe everyone should have access to a good quality home. Across the borough, around 1,200 new homes need to be built every year to meet current demand.

Building 10 new affordable homes at Anton Road would provide much needed housing in the local area and help to enhance the neighbourhood.

These plans are still at an early stage and we want to hear your views on our initial ideas. This feedback will be considered as the proposals are developed further. Ultimately, should these ideas progress to a planning application, a report will be submitted as part of the application which explains how consultation feedback has influenced and shaped the development of the proposals.

The site and proposed new homes

As shown on the map below, the proposed homes would be spread across two council-owned sites at Anton Road, South Ockendon.

These sites offer a great opportunity to deliver new homes. At present, both are occupied by underused garages and suffer from fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour. We want to put them to better use to help serve the local community. They are also sustainably located given their close proximity to a range of shops, schools, community facilities and public transport links.

Our proposals seek to redevelop the two sites to deliver a total of 10 new homes. Four homes are proposed for the northern site: two x two-bedroom houses and two x three-bedroom houses. Six homes are proposed for the southern site: two x two-bedroom houses and four x three-bedroom houses.

All of the new homes would be owned and managed by Thurrock Council to provide high-quality, affordable homes for residents who already live in Thurrock.

In line with Thurrock Council policy, six car parking spaces will be provided for residents of the northern site, and nine car parking spaces will be provided for residents of the southern site. The remaining 16 spaces across both sites will be for public use. Alongside this, access roads to both sites would be created which would provide an additional 12 new public parking spaces. Secure cycle storage would also be included across both sites.

Careful consideration has been given to the design of the scheme to ensure that the rear access to the properties bordering the boundary of both sites will be retained.

As part of the proposals, both sites would be landscaped to provide new green space, which would help to improve the overall look and feel of the area while offering a new visual amenity for existing residents. New trees will also be planted across both sites.
