Feasibility Study into the potential future use and restoration of Coalhouse Fort We have received funding from National Highways Designated Funds to undertake feasibility studies at this nationally significant Scheduled Monument. The site has been closed to public access in recent years and options need to be found as to how the site can be conserved both appropriately and sustainably.
The site is extensive, and the condition of many areas has made it unsafe for access and the costly work needed poses further challenges. The study will consider the physical conservation and management of some buildings, funding options as well as engagement with the local and wider community to establish stakeholders who might be able to assist in identifying a sustainable future for the site. This project builds on extensive previous work and considers three specific areas of the site and how these could be sustainably brought back into use. The three areas of the fort considered include the gatehouse, a number of casemates and a portion of the below ground magazines.
Consultation exercises will begin in October 2024 and the feasibility study will conclude in spring 2025.
