28 Sept Update

Unfortunately, due to crew shortages, we were unable to complete the food waste collection today.

Those properties which were missed today will be collected tomorrow

We apologise for the inconvenience

Thurrock will be introducing a new weekly food recycling collection across the borough. Before we do so, we will be conducting a pilot in your area so we can see how well the scheme works and to seek your views on how it may be improved.

Why are we doing this?

Recycled, food waste can be turned into something useful. Your food waste will be taken to a special processing plant which uses bacteria to break down organic matter and creates methane which is collected and converted into biogas and used to generate electricity, heat or transport fuels. It also creates a nutrient-rich digestate that can be used as a fertiliser for agriculture and in land regeneration.

Because food waste can produce valuable materials, the cost to process it is much less than the cost to process refuse which will save the council and yourselves money.

Therefore, later this year we will be introducing a new weekly food recycling collection. We will be delivering two new containers to your home together with instructions on how to use them. All you will need to do is empty any food waste you have, such as plate scrapings, peelings and tea bags into the new food recycling caddy and then put it out for collection in your new food recycling bin. Food waste will be collected every week on the same day as your normal waste and recycling collections.

A forum has been created below for each week of the pilot, this is where you can leave feedback.

It is important that feedback is helpful, constructive, considerate and polite and relates to the food waste collection pilot only.
