You Said, We Did

In July 2024 we ran a public engagement exercise to get your views on the proposed Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Thurrock. Feedback from the engagement shaped the final version approved at the Cabinet meeting on 12 February 2025. Some of the changes that came as a result of your feedback are:

You said

  • The LCWIP and these maps are not suitable for colour-blind people.
  • Similar colours are used for different improvement proposals.
  • I find the purple blue and blue colour lines especially hard to differentiate. There will be other residents with much worse eyesight than mine who may also struggle.

We did

  • The colour palette was reviewed and changed to ensure people with reduced eyesight or colour blindness find them more legible and easier to read.

You said

  • There are no safe routes for Cyclists and pedestrians from Stanford-Le-Hope to Linford/East Tilbury and vice versa, same from Orsett etc
  • Safer and more connected walking routes into Lakeside shopping area, and safer connected walking and cycling routes into Upminster
  • Creating a direct pedestrian/cycle connection from Grays Beach Park/Curzon Drive towards Asda Tilbury to ease congestion and shorten walking and cycling times for anyone working in that area

We did

After reviewing these and all the rest of the comments additional measures were included in the plan, these include:

  • 14 crossing or accessibility improvements for walk/cycle added to the plan
  • 12 new paths or improvements to existing paths added to the plan
  • 17 new traffic-calmed streets added to the plan
  • 5 new links overcoming severance barriers added to the plan

You said

  • Southend Road does not need to be totally 20mph, just the part outside Gable Hall School
  • Southend Road, Corringham 20 mph equals rat runs.

We did

  • The proposal to introduce a 20 mph speed limit on Stanford Road was withdrawn from the plans.

You said

  • I would like to use my bike more often and welcome the development of safe infrastructure
  • Better for the environment and definitely supports mental wellbeing with the cycling infrastructure
  • An effective cycle network will reduce car usage and encourage people to cycle more with benefits for their health and the environment.

We did

  • We moved forward with the plan for the strong support shown. Having the plan approved is the first step that unlucks future work to deliver these measures.

Thanks to your help, the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan is better at considering your needs for a continuous and interconnected network for cycling across the borough and improved local provisions for walking and wheeling.
