What is a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan?
It is a new ten year plan that all councils need to have in place. It contains some suggestions for improvements to our roads and streets to make walking, wheeling (e.g. wheelchairs or mobility scooters) and cycling an easier and more accessible mode of transport for our communities. We would like to hear your views on the ideas within the plan.
What are we proposing?
We want to create an improved and better-connected network for walking, wheeling and cycling throughout Thurrock.
The proposals in the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan include improvements to the quality of footways and crossing points. As well as separate lanes for cycling, walking and motorised vehicles; making our residential streets safer by reducing the amount and speed of traffic.
Why is it important?
There are many benefits to increased walking, wheeling and cycling. Including:
- Reduced congestion
- Reduced air pollution
- Better public realm (streets, parks, open spaces etc)
- Better physical, mental and social health
- Reduced carbon emissions which helps reach wider net-zero carbon goals
- Economic growth and more vibrant communities
- Improved inclusivity and reduced inequalities for all
