We are consulting on proposals to improve standards in and around local private rental properties. We plan to do this by creating a licensing scheme for private rented properties in Thurrock, and we would like to hear your thoughts on these plans. We’re keen to hear from tenants, landlords and also from residents living near to privately rented properties.

If Selective Licensing were introduced in Thurrock, the council would require private landlords and managing agents to have a licence for any rental properties within most of the borough. This licence would help ensure that:

  • Properties are kept safe and in good condition.
  • Gardens and yards are clean and tidy.
  • Landlords manage anti-social behaviour by tenants, such as noise, litter, and illegal dumping.

The below map shows the proposed licensing areas. You can download a version of this map here: Map

Landlords must pay a fee for each property to cover the scheme's costs and allow inspections.

We believe that selective licensing in Thurrock will:

  • Improve living conditions for tenants.
  • Reduce anti-social behaviour.
  • Support good landlords and discourage bad ones.
  • Enhance the local area, making it a better place to live.
  • Create a safer, well maintained and united neighbourhood where people get along

We want your feedback on our proposal to introduce selective licensing in Thurrock to improve rental property standards. If you're a resident, tenant, landlord, agent, organisation, or business, please share your views by completing the online survey.
