Once an EHC Plan has been issued it must be reviewed regularly. For children under 5 years old this will happen every 6 months and for children over 5 years old the review will be held annually. The local authority must ensure that every EHC Plan is reviewed within these timescales and work closely with schools and other educational settings to make sure this happens.

The Annual Review is the opportunity for parents, carers and young people to reflect on the past year in terms of:

  • What’s working / not working (whose perspective this is)
  • What’s important now and in the future (things they enjoy and want to continue doing)
  • What’s important to them (what good support looks like specifically for their situation and circumstances)

Feedback from parents, carers and young people about their experience of the annual review process is key to ensuring continuous and improved service delivery.
