Stanford West Traffic and Speeding Interventions

Thurrock Council has a duty to ensure its streets are safe and suitable to be used by all residents. Many of the roads in Stanford-le-Hope West are busy residential streets with lots of home, and on-street parking, located near places where people want to get to - schools, shops, parks, the train station. Traffic can use these streets to avoid parts of the main roads, which can cause a nuisance to residents. To support residents, we are proposing some simple, low impact changes to streets in the area which will help to reduce traffic speeds down to 20mph, making the roads safer for everyone, protecting residents, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users.

To achieve this, we will be looking to install speed humps to help manage the speed of vehicles, making slight modifications to some junctions to help better manage speeds and traffic flows into or out of the roads. We are not proposing to close or change the routing of travel or traffic through the area, nor making any additional parking restrictions. Improved crossings will make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross busier roads, such as Corringham Road and Butts Lane, and with a reduction in traffic speeds, we will be able to sign a designated walking and cycling route, linking Rookery Corner through to the Sorrells Roundabout.

Our proposal is divided into three main areas, which are as follows:

Area 1 – Residential area between Butts Lane, London Road and the railway line;

Area 2 – Wharf Road between The Green and Wharf Close and these residential streets - Chantry Crescent, Copland Road, Fairview Avenue (part), Hadfield Road, Rectory Road, Salisbury Avenue, The Hollies, Walkers Square and Warren Close.

Area 3 – All residential Streets between Billet Lane and Rainbow Lane, south of Corringham Road.

These proposals are being funded by a grant received from the Department for Transport, and is separate to other funds spent by Thurrock Council.
